Ugandan musician and humanitarian dedicated to transforming pain into purpose through artistic expression, cultural education, and community empowerment.
I was born in Northern Uganda during the height of the Lord's Resistance Army conflict, a time marked by fear, uncertainty, and profound loss. When I was just three years old, I lost my father to the war – a tragedy that would shape my understanding of suffering and resilience from my earliest memories.
My family and I were forced to flee our home, seeking refuge in an Internally Displaced Persons camp. For five long years, we lived under conditions that no child should ever experience – uncertain where our next meal would come from, constantly aware of the danger surrounding us. Yet even in that darkness, my mother taught me something invaluable: that strength isn't about never feeling fear, but about finding courage in the midst of it.
In 2012, when I was facing the very real possibility that my education would end due to financial hardship, my older brother introduced me to something that would change my life forever: the M-LISADA Organization in Kampala. This incredible nonprofit supports vulnerable children through education, music, and mentorship.
At M-LISADA, I discovered a part of myself I didn't know existed. I joined the Dance of Hope a Ugandan youth based performing art ensemble, that enables youths to explore and experience the primal transformational power of music.
In 2018, something miraculous happened: I was selected for Dance of Hope's first international tour to the United States. Standing on those stages, sharing our music and stories with people from completely different worlds, I realized that my painful past didn't have to define my future. It could instead fuel my purpose.
The generosity of sponsors I met during that tour made it possible for me to pursue higher education. I completed my Diploma in Public Health Dentistry in 2023, and shortly after founded the Dental Health Caravan – a mobile outreach program that brings free dental care to underserved communities. There's nothing quite like seeing a child smile for the first time without pain, or watching an elder regain their confidence through restored dental health.
Today, I continue to walk this dual path as both a healthcare professional and musician. Through my Zenji Caravan Band, I blend traditional African sounds with contemporary storytelling, celebrating resilience and hope.
My journey has taught me that our deepest wounds often become the source of our greatest strengths. What was once pain has become my purpose – and I'm honored to share that purpose with you through music and service.

Cheyenne Native and Ugandan Musician Team Up to Bring Clean Water to Uganda
When the Adungu speaks, communities listen. Recently, my music caught the attention of a kindred spirit from Cheyenne, Wyoming, and together we're turning melodies into clean water for villages in Uganda. The news feature on Wyoming Link tells the story of how the ancient strings of the Adungu-my traditional harp-are now harmonizing with a mission to provide clean water to those who need it most.
The article highlights our partnership: a Cheyenne native moved by Uganda's beauty and challenged by its water crisis, and me, using the reach of my music to amplify the call. Together, we're proving that the Adungu isn't just an instrument-it's a tool for transformation.

Meet the EldersWhether it's a school residency, an elderly visit, or a collaboration, I'm just a message away.
My artistry is deeply rooted in education and entertainment through residencies and storytelling. This approach focuses on building connections and fostering community through the universal language of music.
As a musician and educator from Uganda, I am passionate about sharing the richness of African culture with students. A musical cross-cultural residency with me is a unique opportunity for students to explore the rhythms, melodies, and stories of Uganda, while fostering global understanding and creativity.
Students leave with a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and global citizenship, having experienced firsthand the power of music to transcend boundaries.
My dream is to harmonize my two passions (music and health) to create a unique approach to community development. I believe that by combining music and health, we can create a holistic experience that touches the hearts and minds of people.
I am the founder of the Zenji caravan band, a group of musicians and friends I grew up with who share my vision of using music to uplift and inspire.
Through our performances and outreach programs, we aim to create spaces where healing happens through both art and science.
We believe that true wellness encompasses both physical health and emotional well-being, and our programs reflect this integrated approach.
This dual focus allows us to address community needs in a comprehensive, sustainable way.

"I am often brought to tears by how beautiful the experience has been for our elders. Okema's music is unbelievably beautiful and he makes everything fun and engaging. He is an inspiration to be around - bringing joy, community, and healing through his music."

"Having Okema as a visiting artist was an awesome experience for both me and my students. I heard nothing but great things all day. He kept everything fresh and engaging, and He was fully present with the students from start to finish. Every class participated in hands-on exercises, and the level of involvement was incredible. The students absolutely loved it. It was powerful to see how He connected with them in the moment and brought something new and enriching to our program. There's nothing but good things to say about the experience."
